About
I am a theatre artist born and raised in Honolulu, HI. As the child of immigrant parents from Hong Kong, I was raised with a close connection to my Chinese roots, while navigating the local culture in Hawaii around me, and also the larger American culture present in the media and at school. Growing up, I found myself shying away from my Chinese culture. I wanted to play basketball and watch cartoons instead of going to Chinese school, or kung fu class. I wanted to be "American". Looking back now as an adult, I can only lament how my life would have been had I just been a bit more open minded with my mother culture in my formative years.
As I began my theatrical studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I was lucky enough to sign up for a Kabuki class, and subsequently ended up in the Kabuki production at the university that year. This nine month training and rehearsal period reshaped my views on what theatre could be, and eventually led me to study traditional theatre in China and Japan through TCG’s Fox Fellowship.
Since then I have shaped my professional career through theatrical fusion between cultural forms, and also between new age and traditional forms of theatre.
